How to Count the Number of Words in your Document

Word Count for Your Spanish Translation

If you're interested in our English to Spanish translation services but don't know the total number of words that you need to translate, don't worry. You can easily calculate it below. Use one of the following four methods as a tool:

 

Method 1

If the text to be translated is available as a computer file, follow these instructions to obtain electronic word counts from the most common software programs:

If the text is relatively short and you can copy/paste it in the box below, do so and click on the Count Words button.


 

Method 3

If you cannot use Methods 1 or 2 and you know the total number of pages, just enter this number in the "Total Pages" box below and then click the Calculate button. This method considers that one typed English-language page contains approximately 250 words. Please note that this is an estimate only and that the actual cost will be based on the word count that we calculate from your source (original) document.

To count the number of words in a Microsoft Word document:

  1. Open the document in Microsoft Word
  2. On the 'Review' tab, in the 'Proofing' group, click 'Word Count'
  3. Alternatively, look at the status bar at the bottom of the Word window

To count the number of words in a Microsoft PowerPoint document:

  1. Open the document in Microsoft PowerPoint
  2. On the 'File' tab, click Info
  3. At the bottom of the rightmost pane, click 'Show All Properties'
  4. The 'Words' property counts all the text on slides and notes pages

To count the number of words in a PDF document:

  1. Open the document in Adobe Acrobat (full version only, not Acrobat Reader)
  2. Go to the 'File' menu
  3. Choose 'Save As'
  4. In the 'Save as type' drop-down menu, choose 'Rich Text Format (RTF)'
  5. Click the 'Save' button
  6. Open up your new RTF document in Microsoft Word
  7. On the 'Review' tab, in the 'Proofing' group, click 'Word Count'

 

 

 

InDesign Word Count

Adobe InDesign

To count the number of words in an Adobe InDesign document:

  1. Open the document in Adobe InDesign
  2. Click on 'Window' > 'Info' to open the 'Info' panel
  3. To count words in a select area of text, highlight the text and see the Character, Word, Line and Paragraph counts appear in the 'Info' panel
  4. To count words in a whole story, stretching across a large number of text frames, click your cursor into one of the text frames and see the relevant info appear in the panel

To count the number of words in a QuarkXPress document:

  1. Open the document in QuarkXPress
  2. Go to the 'Utilities' menu
  3. Choose 'Word and Character Count'
  4. Select 'Layout/Story'

To count the number of words in an Adobe FrameMaker document:

  1. Open the document in FrameMaker
  2. Go to the 'File' menu
  3. Choose the 'Utilities' function
  4. Choose the 'Document Reports' function
